Appearance

He gave a hoot for what it's worth
Now it's time for him to return to the earth

The first thing that you need to know about Longface is the reason for his name. His snout his unusually long for a cat, tapered to a sharp point like that of a dog. His sharp, unfriendly features make him seem constantly displeased with his surroundings.

His fur is short and coarse, barely keeping him warm when the colder seasons roll in. He has a solid coat with no distinguishable markings. A sold, sandy red-brown, which sometimes glows a brighter red depending on the light.

He has small, squinting eyes that seem to constantly glare at everything. His irises are a lovely dark green shade, standing out against his duller sandy coat. His body build is lean and skinny. His legs and tail are noticeably lengthy, giving him a lanky appearance like a great big brown spider.

Quick description: Longface is a sandy brown tom with a long, narrow face and sharp green eyes.

Personality

You must destroy, oh you must destroy
Beyond all recognition

Longface isn't exactly a beacon of good manners. He can be abrasive and difficult, not caring how his words may impact those who hear them. He is the kind of cat that desperately wants to be liked and cared for, but doesn't quite have the social skills to achieve that. Instead, he self-sabotages by aggressively pushing away any chance at rejection. If he rejects others first, then surely that means he can never be rejected. He is most abrasive with the cats that he most admires at a distance, the ruder he is, the more he wishes he were you or that you would like him. He's never self-reflective enough to really acknowledge this contradiction, instead, Longface will deny at any opportunity what his true feelings are and simply return to being rude.

He feels very much that others owe him admiration, love and respect. Any chance that he gets, he will try to one-up others, and if he feels he is being denied what he deserves, he will respond aggressively. As a young kit, his parents showered him in love and affection in the hopes that he would grow up just as loving, but unfortunately, Longface was more inclined towards a less sunny personality. He can be entitled and demanding, wanting things to be done his way or not at all. The slightest diversion of attention from him ignites a deep anxiety within this heart, as he often felt that he had to compete with his brothers for the attention of his mother and father. This pecking order was mostly imagined by Longkit, but still it was internalised and reveals itself in surprising ways. At the heart of his poor behaviour lies a vulnerability that scares him and makes him feel incredibly weak.

Longface frequently finds himself comparing his own abilities and possessions with that of others. He becomes extremely envious of others, not willing to accept that the cats he care about can care about others, too. Being left out of anything makes him extremely bitter and angry. However, his jealousy can sometimes inspire good in Longface, as it tends to inspire him to put in the work in order to no longer feel inferior next to whoever he envies. He always measures himself against the skills of others, his competitive nature driving him to surpass and succeed. Even when it seems hopeless, Longface is determined to beat his opponent.

His arrogant sense of superiority makes it difficult for him to know his limits in relation to others. He overestimates his abilities and that is one of his greatest downfalls. His over-confidence causes him to take bigger risks and to border on reckless with his decision-making. He plays with fire and very often gets burned. Longface can be quite irrational and come to the most incoherent and illogical conclusions. He believes in what he thinks and is very unlikely to change his mind or listen to reason. Even when presented with evidence, he will refute any point if he does not like it. In this way, he can also be quite assertive as he states what he thinks and does not back down to others just to please them. He stands up for his own opinion and doesn't let others push him around.

The greatest juxtaposition in his personality appears in his sarcastic attitude contrasted against his charming side. When he wants to be, he can be sweet and charismatic, especially when faced with someone he finds particularly pretty or handsome. His personality appears to flip completely and he becomes likeable and respectable. Be on his bad side, however, and you will be met with the most cutting remarks he can muster.

Longface is extremely proud to be born in CoyoteClan. He is patriotic to the core, completely and totally identified with his role as a CoyoteClan warrior. His Clan comes first in his mind and he would do absolutely anything for it. He is generally considered to be hard-working, always ready to pull his weight and becoming easily irritated with anyone else who doesn't. His pride in CoyoteClan gives him an air of confidence. This tom never doubts his own abilities, oftentimes to his downfall.

Backstory

Kids have given me, lots of hugs
As I lead the charge against litter bugs

BIRTH
Longkit's parents, Ebonyflight and Finchblossom, were a pair united by their shared love and desire to begin a family. The beginnings of this family played out almost like a fairytale... at first. The day that Finchblossom finally bore her kits, the two new parents were ecstatic by their small litter of three boys. A tom as dark as their father, like a shadow next to his two brothers. And two little brown toms, so much like their father in every aspect except for the missing white splotches. Even from an early age, Longkit's competitiveness shone through. He would wiggle past his two brothers and try to knead them aside with his tiny paws, greedy for milk.

KITHOOD
Longkit grew up extremely close to his brothers Bearkit and Scorchkit. It all started out pretty perfect. They would play, and compete and cause trouble around camp. His happiest memories consist of those short moons playfighting under the watchful gaze of their father, Ebonyflight.

They were only a moon away from apprenticeship when Honeypaw came along and ruined everything. Longkit took an instant dislike to the molly. Scorchkit was too starry-eyed to see it, but Longkit knew that she-cat was trouble from the start. She stole Longkit's brother away from him, leaving him confused and frustrated and lonely just when they were each about to start a whole new chapter of their lives. No matter what Longkit did to try and drag Scorchkit back to playing with him and Bearkit, he was far more interested in Honeypaw and her hare-brained stories.

APPRENTICESHIP
Even during their apprentice ceremony, Scorchpaw could only spare a minute to smile at his brother before padding after her again. Longpaw was given [ ] as a mentor, and as the two touched noses, Longpaw eyed his wayward brother out of the corner of his eye. His mentor was well-intentioned and always had his best interests at heart. Training was tough on Longpaw, as a young cat he quickly found that he wasn’t quite as skilled as the other apprentices and he was sorely disappointed by his own lack of talent.

At first, rather than inspiring him to work harder, Longpaw dealt with his lack of talent by being extremely rude to the other apprentices. He got into frequent arguments and bickered constantly with his denmates, quickly becoming very disliked among the other youths of CoyoteClan. [ ] would not tolerate this, and spoke with Longpaw often about his poor behaviour. There was only one apprentice really who saw through Longpaw’s bitterness to the layer of vulnerability beneath, and that was Greypaw. Greypaw was two moons younger than him, and as a kit Longpaw had always ignored the little grey tom. But Greypaw was sweet and determined to discover the reasons for Longpaw being so grumpy all the time. He perservered when it came to befriending the grouchy brown cat, and Longpaw eventually grew to enjoy spending time with Greypaw, even though he would never admit it.

And then came the sparring sessions. Longpaw half-hoped he would have been paired up with Greypaw, but of course the cat standing opposite him was Scorchpaw. Despite himself, Longpaw found his claws digging into the earth in fury as he looked at the brother who barely spoke to him anymore. Bearpaw seemed to see no ill intent in Scorchpaw’s behaviour, but to Longpaw, it was a betrayal that left deep wounds that had yet to heal. Longpaw gave his best effort during their sparring sessions, but Scorchpaw beat him again and again. Continiously he found his muzzle shoved into the dirt by a black paw, or felt himself getting flung across the clearing. Mortified by his constant defeat, Longpaw’s bitterness towards Scorchpaw tripled, and he fought with even more ferocity. Once, he even got into trouble with [ ] for unsheathing his claws and trying to strike Scorchpaw across his muzzle. Greypaw was always the cat who came to him to encourage him to just keep trying his best, but he WAS trying his best. That was made it sting so much, that his best was not enough to face up against his brother.

One day, when Scorchpaw managed to pin him down to the ground, Longpaw was startled to see a flash of something in his brother’s eyes. Something dark that made Longpaw’s heart grow cold. He felt that Scorchpaw held him down for a little longer than he needed to, and there was something… strange, about the encounter. When Scorchpaw let him up, Longpaw found that he no longer just disliked his brother. He didn’t trust him. He feared there was something… strange, about him.

After countless combat sessions with Scorchpaw, he began to learn his typical fighting style and managed to beat him a few select times. Each victory, Greypaw would encourage him afterwards, saying things such as “see? I told you it would happen!” But his victories were soured by the many, many losses that outnumbered them. Though Longpaw was always viewed as difficult, surly and grouchy, no cat could ever doubt his dedication to CoyoteClan and his determination to work as hard as he possibly could. Not once did Longpaw shirk his duties caring for the elders or babysitting the kits. Always, he was dedicated to his role.

WARRIORHOOD
Longpaw and Bearpaw became warriors together, earning the names Longface and Bearfang. Longface was a bit ruffled by his poor warrior name, he would have liked to have been called “Longclaw” or “Longtooth”, something that sounded fierce and tough. A focus on his long snout and facial features was a bit of a slap to the face for him, but miraculously he managed to keep his mouth buttoned shut during the ceremony. And so, Longface consigned himself to the mundane day-to-day of being a CoyoteClan warrior. Greypaw, after saving the kits from a venomous snake that had slipped into the camp without anyone noticing, earned the name “Greyflash” in honour of his speed in grabbing the kits out of reach of danger. Longface was happy to be joined in the warrior’s den by his friend, though he didn’t get all sappy about it with him. That just wasn’t his style.

Not long after Greyflash’s early warrior ceremony, Scorchpaw and Honeypaw earned their names together. Longface was extremely annoyed at this, and when both were named “Scorchrunner” and “Honeyspirit”, he refused to join in with the ceremonial chants. Instead, he walked away from the ceremony early, with Greyflash looking after him with concern. Throughout his days as a warrior, Longface would refuse to interact with Scorchrunner or Honeyspirit, believing there was something wrong with Scorchrunner and that Honeyspirit was to blame for it. She was like a corrupting influence, a harlot who stole away his family. And blood was always supposed to come first.

One day, Bluestorm came charging back into camp with terrible injuries, and Longface was one of the first cats to rush to his aid. Thinking they were under attack, Longface braced himself to face the incoming danger, his fur bristling wildly. And yet, the name Bluestorm gasped out was not that of an enemy warrior, but of Longface’s own brother. A cold chill ran through his pelt as he stared down at the injured tom, stunned into silence by his tale of a dreadful murder committed on the border. Honeyspirit, though he had never liked her in the slightest, hadn’t deserved to die. She was still his clanmate, and deep down Longface had always held a certain level of loyalty to his clanmates. Bearfang refused to believe Bluestorm’s story, but Longface knew what he had seen in Scorchrunner when they were sparring as apprentices. That glint of murderous intent. He knew now that had been what he had sensed was wrong with his dark littermate. All this time, Scorchrunner had been a monster, waiting for his chance to strike.

Heartbroken by the confirmation of his worst fears, Longface declared Scorchrunner to no longer be his brother. He argued with Bearfang about the truth of Bluestorm’s claims, and the one thing Longface spat at his other brother was “Why would Bluestorm lie?” When Scorchrunner returned to the camp, Longface attempted to charge at him and attack him. He had to be pinned down by Greyflash, who pleaded with him to calm down. He yowled and hissed insults from the ground, his eyes blazing with green fire as he bared his teeth at his former brother. Alderstar exiled Scorchrunner from the Clan, and Longface watched with burning hatred as the silhouette of his opposite disappeared out of view.

Ever since that day, Longface has watched the territory carefully for signs of his brother’s return. He worries that Scorchrunner may attempt to come back to the Clan and harm someone else. But something in him hopes he will, so Longface can finally fight him and win. In the meantime, he has been detached from his clanmates, struggling to connect with anyone beyond Greyflash, who tolerates his bad attitude faithfully.
